Sports in GuangZhou

As a major city of sports, Guangzhou has always been among the top three in the city ranking of the national city sports meets. Athletes from Guangzhou win around 10 world championships each year.

The Municipal Government of Guangzhou attaches great importance to improving people's health and the construction of sports utilities in communities. At present, there are nearly 10,000 sports organizations in Guangzhou. The people who regularly engage in sports (3 times a week and more than 1 hour each time) make up about 58.82% of the total. Amateur sports are developing very quickly.

Every year, there are various mass sports events like walking, dragon boat races, swimming across the Pearl River and mountain-climbing. The venues are also among the best in terms of modernization. The development of the sports industry is boosted by demonstration matches, gymnastics and the sports lottery.

Guangzhou is rich in its experience of hosting national and international sporting events such as US-China-Brazil Men's Basketball Match, F1 Pilot Driving, WTA Guangzhou Open Women Tennis, Senior Wrestling World Championships, the Thomas Cup Badminton Championships, Uber Cup Badminton Championships and two national sports meetings. The city also won the bids for the 2010 Asian Games and the 49th Table Tennis Team Championships. Guangzhou will take full advantage of the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games to build itself into a world-class city of sports.

The 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games (the 16th Asian Games) was hosted from Nov. 12 to Nov. 27, 2010 in Guangzhou, China. Guangzhou is the second Chinese city to obtain the right to host the Asian Games. The Guangzhou Asian Games facilitated the holding of 42 separate events, the highest number of venues in the history of the Asian Games to date.

There were 70 venues, including 58 venues renovated and expanded based on original ones and 12 totally newly built venues. The 10th Asian Para Games was also hosted in Guangzhou after the conclsion of the 16th Asian Games. Multiple records created during the Asian Games have been listed as the “Top in the Asian Games”, the “Top in China” and the “Top in the World” by the China World Records Association.

From all feedback and applaud received to date, the 16th Asian Games was hosted in Guangzhou very successfully and had an extensive and profound effect in Asia or even the world. The hosting of the Games enabled Guangzhou to build up itself and its reputation as a national first-class sports city. After the Asian Games, the venues were renovated and modified to play their own functional roles. Guangzhou City has always promoted the spirit of the Asian Games and the Asian Para Games to integrate the development of the sports industry and sports undertaking; so as to give full play to the sound social and economic effect of the competition venues and non-competition venues after the Asian Games.
